Somerset Garden Design offers a complete garden design service, we specialize in planting plans and cutting flower gardens. Based in Toronto and Thornbury, the studio works on residential projects in both urban and countryside locations. Our ethos is to be a client first design firm, with a principal focus on sustainable designs that support local ecosystems. It is our belief that we are all stewards of the land and our role at Somerset Garden Design is to create responsible, resilient, and stunning designs for now and for the future.
The Studio is led by Christine Carlton. After working for more than 20 years in the Luxury Fashion Industry, Christine knew it was time to re-wild her life, as she was ready to reconnect with Nature and do her part to heal the planet. Christine retrained as a Landscape Designer at the University of Guelph and founded Somerset Garden Design. Horticulture is Christine’s passion, as she believes strongly in the restorative benefits of gardening and sharing the magic of nature with others.
Our team of installation partners are comprised of skilled professionals who take pride in their work. With a focus on attention to detail and quality craftsmanship, the teams we work with ensure that every project is completed to the highest standards.
This service is a collaborative approach between the studio and our client. We begin with a consultation to understand your goals and dreams for your space. We will conduct a site survey and document your needs for your garden. Following the initial meeting, we will send you a proposal which encompasses the fee structure and the design/build process. Following this, we will move to the design phase and will present concept plans prior to moving to a masterplan for hardscaping and softscaping.
If you have existing garden beds that require updating or if you have recently completed construction, and plantings are still required, Christine can work with you to create the garden of your dreams. Whether it’s cottage garden style or a contemporary urban aesthetic, Christine’s Horticultural knowledge enables her to bring your garden dreams to life.
This service is ideal for hands-on clients that would like design direction but have the ability to implement the designs themselves or work directly with a build team. This service works well for clients in urban settings with smaller properties and tighter budgets. You’ll need to send us photos of your space, your budget, measurements and what your goals are for the garden. We’ll then book a time to meet with your virtually. This meeting will be followed up with preliminary designs.
Christine is happy to offer advice sessions for anyone not needing a complete garden design service. This service works well for those looking for direction or advice regarding their existing garden. This can include suggestions for layout, materials, planting plans and furniture & accessories.
